Meet the little brother of this spring's Canon i9900, a medium-format photo printer that earned high marks for speedy performance and impressive print quality. Part of the newly announced line of Pixma photo printers, the Canon iP8500 brings a couple of new features to the table and looks to live up to its big brother's good reputation.

Upside: Like the i9900, the Pixma iP8500 uses eight dye-based color primaries--cyan, magenta, yellow, photo cyan, photo magenta, black, red, and green--dubbed the ChromaPlus ink system, so we expect the iP8500's output to look just as good. The inks are also unbelievably cheap; based on Canon's capacity ratings, we estimate that the ink cost of an 8x10 photo is only 14 cents. Further, the i9900 was fast, and we're counting on the iP8500 to come in with similarly speedy times. You'll also find all the new Pixma features, such as dual paper trays, autoduplexing (Canon plans to introduce dual-sided photo paper), and higher paper-input capacity (300 sheets).

Downside: The inks may be cheap, but Canon makes up the cost difference in paper. A pack of 15 8.5x11 sheets of Canon's best-quality photo paper, Photo Paper Pro, costs $13.95. Photographers concerned about print longevity may shy away from Canon's dye-based inks since pigment-based ones have generally proven more fade-resistant.

Outlook: Given that this printer inherited the i9900's ink set and printhead technology, we expect the Canon Pixma iP8500 ($349.99) to do well in both performance and print-quality tests. We'll study its prints once it ships this fall. http://reviews.cnet.com/Canon_Pixma_iP8500/4505-3156_7-31091257-2.html?tag=top
