11x17 Laser Printer

Not all printers can print on 11x17 paper. If you are looking for a 11x17 Laser Printer, also known as a tabloid printer or large format printer, then this website will help you in your search. Some examples of 11 x 17 Laser Printer brands in different price ranges are highlighted below. Follow the links for more information.

The intent of this article is to look at the large format 11x17" color laser printers and see which might be appropriate for your application. There are 3 variations on color laser printers out there today.

Standard laser technology

This printer uses a single laser, which must pass over a page four times to print a color image. Each pass lays down a single toner color: cyan, magenta, yellow, or black. When it comes to standard color laser technology, the quality is usually very good but the one drawback as compared with LED or Four laser in-line technology has always been speed. (4-6 page per minute)

Four laser in-line technology

The New Xerox Phaser 7700 has not one but four lasers (each with its own toner drum), which lay down all four colors at once, completing a print in one pass—and in a quarter of the time. This means the 7700DN can print color output in a single pass at a claimed 22 pages per minute (ppm) for color or monochrome.

LED technology

With an LED printer it's relatively easy to mount four LED arrays next to one another and print all four colors in one pass, but I have noticed a bit of cross hatching across photograph images which doesn’t make it as good for graphic arts supplies applications. This kind of printer is best suited for office printing where graphics & color representation aren’t as critical.

So let’s have a look at some of the leading contenders out there:

OKIi C9000 STUDIO EDITION

Since their introduction just nine months ago, the OKI® C7000 and C9000 Series color laser printers have already won over 20 awards from independent testing facilities and media outlets in numerous countries. It is one of the best LED type printers. This printer produces a banner size output of 12.9" x 35.4" which is quite unique.

Listed below are some of the features we thought were impressive.

Features:
* Handles up to 110 lb. index card stock
* Single Pass Color® Digital Technology – fullcolor as fast as 21 ppm, monochrome as fast as 26 ppm
* Up to true 1200 x 1200 dpi resolution on selected models
* Powerful 64bit PowerPC 750 processor up to 480 MHz on selected models
* Memory upgradable to 1,024 MB RAM
* Available with duplex (2sided) printing capability
Sells for around $9600 for the base unit (can)

BROTHER HL3450CN

O, Brother, where art thou? It’s hard to get a hold of these guys. The HL3450CN is Brother's second generation, large format color laser printer capable of printing up to 6ppm in color, so you can see they use the standard laser technology. It’s true resolution is only 600 dpi. I think this printer may still be in the development stage.
Features:
* BRScript Level3 (PostScript Level3 Language Emulation)
* Builtin 10/100 BaseTX Ethernet for network connectivity
* Job accounting and printer running costs may be useful
Sells for around $5899 (can)

HP COLOR LASERJET 8550

The first think that didn’t impress me with this printer was the quality of the sample output. It may be good enough for the office environment, but certainly not for pre-press or graphic applications. The image was flat looking and detail was lost. The Hp8550 uses the standard laser technology and produces 6 ppm.

Features:
* Up to 4 trays holding up to 3,100 pages from 3.9 by 7.5 inches to 12 x 18.5 inches in size
* Support for a wide variety of media (from 16pound bond to 80pound cover)
* Direct PDF printing makes it easy to integrate PDF files into your business workflow
* 200MHz processor
* a duty cycle of 60,000 pages per month
Sells for around $6799 for the base unit (can)

LEXMARK C910

This LED printer would be a good printer for the office environment but not for pre-press or design firms wanting best quality output. The C910n is designed for heavy use, so it has plenty of paper handling extras. Addons include up to three 550sheet feeders ($899 each), a 3000sheet paper well ($2099), and an internal duplexer ($1099). Lexmark is also developing a finisher that stacks, staples, and punches holes. When printing, the C910n whines loudly, and even when the printer is idle its fan makes a racket. (So make sure you order the optional ear plugs) If you don't install the mechanical duplexer, you won't be able to manually duplex, since there's no manual duplexing capability in the C910n's driver.

Features:
* Print Resolution, Color 2400 image quality
* Print Speed (letter, color) 28 pages per minute
* Processor 400 MHz * Ledger 11" x 17" maximum paper size
* Supports paper weight up to 90lb index
* PCL 6 Emulation & PostScript 3 Emulation
* Duty Cycle, 100,000 pages per month
Sells for around $6399 (can)

QMS6110GN

The Magicolor 6110 GN is able to produce 13by19inch documents (that's even larger than tabloid size pages) It prints crisp, black text with near perfect detail, sharp, narrow lines, and graphics with fine shading and lifelike color. And unlike many laser printers, the 6110 GN produces attractive gray scale photos. With 256MB of memory far more than the typical 32MB or 64MB of most color lasers we've tested the unit should be able to support network users hammering away all day long without any logjams. And as you'd expect from a printer geared toward graphics professionals, its driver provides a number of color space options for approximating the printer's final color output on your monitor. The 6110 GN also has a nifty email feature: Once configured on a network and an office email server, it notifies users when their print jobs are complete. Using the standard laser technology, the 6110 GN's. Minolta/QMS sells an optional $318 scanner attachment that converts the 6110 GN into a color copier.

Features:
* A 200 MHz processor produces 612 color ppm and 24 black ppm
* PostScript 3, PCL® 6, and PDF Emulation
* Readytoshare 10/100BaseTX Ethernet card for instant networking
* Standard Resolution 1200 dpi
Sells for around $5599 (can)

XEROX PHASER 7700

Xerox's Phaser 7700 is positioned as a strong competitor. The new Phaser 7700DN , because of it’s four lasers, each with its own drum, can print color output in a single pass at a claimed 22 pages per minute (ppm) for color or monochrome. The 7700DN printed very nice quality color photos, taking only about 30 seconds for an 8 by 10inch photo stored at 200 pixels per inch (ppi) and about 1 minute for a photo stored at 300 ppi. But all of this new technology and speed doesn’t come at a cheep price.

Features:
* Genuine Adobe PostScript 3
* Universal paper tray holds up to 90 lb index stock / multipurpose tray up to 110 lb index
* 500 MHz G4class processor, Adobe PostScript 3, PCL5c
* Up to 100,000 pages/month * 600 x 1200 dpi and Photo Mode
* Automatic 2sided printing * PANTONEapproved solidcolor simulations
* TekColor Dynamic Correction Color Profiles
Sells for around $10,999 for the base unit(can) http://www.currys.com/knowledge/laser.html
